There are no laws to say you can't be registered and use more than one vet for the same pet but some vets do get a bit funny about it. From a practical POV it can get confusing and risky - you go to Vet A, he puts the cat on X medication, you go to Vet B and forget to mention the medication, Vet B prescribes Y medication, turns out the medications don't mix and you end up with a (more) sick cat. Alternatively, you go to Vet B in an emergency, he puts the cat on Z medication, cat worsens and you rush him to Vet A who takes him straight into surgery. In your panic you forget to mention the medication, which you didn't realise thins the blood or prevents blood from clotting, for example, and the cat ends up with complications from the surgery because of it.
Obviously this isn't going to happen in every case and I've gone to other vets occasionally, I just make sure I keep receipts and let my main vets know of any treatments or medications so they can update their notes to reflect this. Mine are thankfully sensible enough to realise that sometimes it's necessary - e.g. in a non-surgical but quite urgent case, where my vets are fully booked, I have taken a pet to another vet knowing that it just needed a course of antibiotics, or when I had a dog spayed at another vet because my situation had changed and money was tight for a while (but I didn't want to wait as dog could go into season again and delay the whole thing). I have heard of some vets getting funny about it though and refusing to let the customer use them again - which they're entitled to do as a business, even if it is a bit petty.0 -
What you say is very true krlyr I think we'll keep him with this new vet now.
Better to be safe than sorry, so they say.
Thanks,

Junior isn't drinking any water at all and he is still breathing quickly and is not as lively as yesterday.:(
We are giving him his tablets every day, he has been referred and we are going to see them tomorrow.
Trouble is poor old Junior can't eat anything from 8pm tonight and our appointment is for 9.45am tomorrow.
I don't know if he will be able to stand not eating, and not going out and the long journey to herts that we've got.
Has anyone else had a simular problem.
Chris
