Never skimp on a power supply - one of the most important yet underrated components
try something like this

600w psu with surge protection!
I personally use either aria.co.uk,dabs.com or novatech.co.uk for my computer equipment just depends on what the best deals are on their sites
I really hope you're having a laugh with those - I'd never let them anywhere near any of my components.
Something like
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=11880&GroupID=9
would be far more suitable.0 -
Beware of the power ratings of cheap PSUs as they wil seldom be able to supply even near their rated power.
The Silverpower SP-400P1B has got very good reviews in its price range and can actually supply its rated 400w!!
Here are some reviews:

You can get from a good retailer like Scan for around 30 pounds including delivery too!0 -

Cheers for all the advice,
I'll most probably go for this one,
will it fit into my dell dimension 4550 and allow me to use the NVIDIA 6600GT AGP graphics card.
Also will I need to buy a cable to plug it in or is one included / use my old one?
Many thanks0 -
Taken from your fresh thread:liverpoolrdbest wrote:Hi,
I have already posted about power supply (and thanks to all those who replyed).
I think I will go for
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=256346
, unless anyone knows of a much better one.
Does anyone know if it will fit my dell dimension 4550 and allow me to use the NVIDIA 6600GT AGP graphics card? - does it need connecting too it?
Also will I need to buy a cable to plug it in or is one included / use my old one?
Many thanks for any advice]
bartman made a valid point that the PSU may not be suitable connector/power-wise, but I found you should be OK except that the replacement you're thinking of may not fit without some modification to the case - see help in changing PSU in my 4550.
You'll probably get the best advice by posting your query in the Dell Dimension - Upgrade Hardware Forum. Also will I need to buy a cable to plug it in or is one included / use my old one?
P.S. Dimension 4550 PDF manual - motherboard diagram is on page 85, which shows a 20-pin connector so the PSU you linked to should be OK in this regard, but clarify this at the Dell Forum just to be sure.0
