Garage has done work without advising of costs

I took my van to the garage last week for an M.O.T which it failed, I didn't want to fix it there and then so drove it away.

I booked the van back in to the same garage a week later because I wanted to get the M.O.T failures fixed.

The garage has now gone ahead and fixed the van without advising me of the costs.

I did mention costs to the women booking the van in, and she replied "the sooner we get it in, the sooner we can have a look" - but we received nothing - a voicemail was left today stating that the vehicle was ready to collect.

Where do I stand here?

Should they advise me before doing any work?

I can't say I trust this garage and it was only down to the fact that we were pressed for time after having so much on lately that we took it back there!

strange how you dont trust a garage yet you took your van to them twice, the second time to get MOT failure repairs done but still not happy, so if they told you the price and you were pressed for time what would you have done. drove it elsewhere which as an MOT failure in a breach of the road traffic act

I take it the van is still MOT'd for you to drive away.

Is the charge for the work reasonable?

Your legally allowed to drive a failed MOT vehicle to and from your home and the place of repair / re-test only if booked in advance.

I didn't realise that the M.O.T was due to run out on the day it did until a few days before, we'd recently moved home and had a wedding so had other things on our mind. The van is also quite large a requires a garage with a bigger ramp, given the time we had, that was the only place we could get it to and returned it there because due to the logistics of work, and getting our child to nursery, not to mention the cost of a futher full M.O.T if we took it elsewhere didn't have much choice - not so strange is it?

    Thanks for the helpful reply.

I will find out tomorrow, I was just checking where I stood if the charges are unreasonable.

Did you take the van in for them to do the repair work or did you ask them not to carry out any work until they'd told you how much it would cost?

The van failed its MOT so both you and the garage knew what was wrong.

You then took it back to get fixed. Why are you complaining that they never told you the price?

I told them I'd like the van to come back in for the work to be done, I asked how much it would cost, to be told that the sooner I got it in, the sooner they could look at it.

Well there you go. They have done what you asked.

They may have done the work as agreed but the price is a crucial part because the Op didnt say 'do the work at any price'.

Under the Supply of Goods and Services Act it must be a reasonable cost if no price was agreed.

But what a reasonable cost will be somewhat subjective.
