Updating address - credit card account

Recently had a frustrating experience trying to update the address on my credit card account with Barclaycard.

I moved house but forgot to update my address. Meanwhile, my card expires and the new one is sent to my old address. So I call them up and tell them what has happened and he puts a stop on the card which is great. But then when I say can I update my address and have a new card sent out and he asks me for my card details for security purposes!

Did he not hear that my card went to the old address? How the hell can I give him card details if I don't have it? "Sorry sir I cannot update the address without the card details". OK. So what now?

"You need to visit your branch with some ID and they will call us to update the address for you"

So, I go to the branch with my passport and debit card. The cashier gives me my credit card number on a bit of paper and tells me use the free phone.

I call them up and explain that I am in the branch and go through all the security questions. She asks me the card number and I read it out. Now she wants to know the expiry date and 3 digit number of the back of the card.

I tell her that the cashier could not give me those details. "Please can I speak to the cashier sir?"

I look over my shoulder. The cashier is dealing with a big queue of customers, so I put the phone down and re-join the queue.

I explain to the cashier that they will still not accept my details and please can she phone on my behalf.

The cashier calls Barclaycard and gives them a security clearance code and hands the phone back to me. After all this they still put me through a load of security questions. Finally I can update my address.

So I read out my new address. "There must be a mistake Sir, we already have this address on our system"

!!!!!!!!??

Why the hell did they send me to the branch when I first called? How the hell can they have my new address when I didn't even get that far when I last called them?

I am so p*ssed off having to spend my Saturday morning dealing with this.

Granted that it is partly my fault for not updating my address before my card expired, but I still think this is terrible service.

I can only assume the security is so tight now due to the increase in fraud but does it really need to be this dificult to update an address on a credit account?

Rant over.

Why oh why do people not re-direct their mail when they move - it does not cost much and is so easy to do.
