Soap v Handwash

I'm curious. Why do people actually use hand wash and shower gel etc in preference to soap? If you're money saving four bars of a decent quality soap like Palmolive costs £1 and two bars (shower and sink) will last 2 weeks or so. Also soap and water is far kinder to the skin, strips less oil off you (thus saving money on body cream!), less likely to cause dermititis and is actually better at removing bacteria from hands (Because of the lathering effect, apparently.)

So what's the pros for hand wash & shower gels then?

I don't like the soggy mess that a bar of soap becomes after a few uses. I much prefer to pump a small amount of liquid hand soap and have done with.

With regards to cost, there are some expensive hand soaps out there but Mr T's value one does me fine. I have a nice pump dispenser on the side of the sink and add a 50:50 mix of soap and water which is fine - not too watery at all. The smell is soapy - I don't care for exotic plant smells particularly so that's ok too!

My sink and bathtub have little ridged areas to keep the soap on and allow it to drain, so it doesn't go soggy. Or you can get wee decorative holders that let the soap dry. It only goes soggy if you leave it in a puddle, in my experience.

i have tried every soap dish know to man and numerous types of soap and it always ends up soggy. I prefer soap as there is less waste packaging but for convenience handwash wins

I help clean our church hall each week and the sinks have stayed much cleaner since I replaced the soap with handwash-no more bars of soap dissolving in a sink of water and no more bars of soap covered in glitter after the Brownies have been doing craft work.

Now all I have to do is find a way to stop the little dears getting glitter all over the floor.

I found soap wasteful - I've never been able to stop it going soggy and I found that you end up wasting so much when a lump squidges off or when you end up scraping gobs of it off the sink because it's stuck. I just don't like the mess it makes and it just always looked so grotty, this horrible greying lump of soap on the side of the sink. I've also got horrible memories of my grandparent's bathroom, where there was always a squidgy lump of Wright's Coal Tar soap which smelt soooo bad.

I take a bar of soap with me on holiday as it can go in hand luggage and I don't care if it goes soggy in the hotel shower!!

At home though it's always shower gel and handwash

If you reuse a foam pump dispenser, and dilute liquid soap to about 1 part soap to 9 parts water (then shake to mix), a bottle of liquid soap or shower gel will last a very long time. It's also not as harsh on the skin in diluted foam form.

  • I make my own soap which leaves my skin feeling lovely and soft. I would never go back to shower gel/handwash. Not sure if its money saving or not but at least I know exactly what I'm putting on my skin ;)

I think soap really dries out my skin so prefer handwash and shower gel. As well as the practical reasons already mentioned by others!
