The Tesco Clubcard SCAM!

So I've built up a fair few clubcard vouchers over the past few years with the aim of spending them on a nice weekend in London. Planned to stay at the Hilton on Tower Bridge.

However, just called them now: no availability with clubcard points (for a stay 3 months away). Any other hotels available in London? Yes, I am told. At DOUBLE the list price if I were to book online!

Seems like a bit of a con to me!!

  • I agree we have done the same.I tired to book a room in Chester and was told at one hotel that all the rooms for clubcard users had gone, this explains a stay we had a few years ago at A Barcelo and the room was really quite grim but even I felt cheeky complaining when I hadn't paid hard cash for it in the first place. The upside to that was they made a huge mess of the bill and instead of it being £100+(bar&restaurant) they charged us £3.25.
So with regards to chester all the nice hotels can keep there room as we have booked into the premier inn and now have £300 to spend in goldsmiths!!

That's always been the downside with Clubcard - pretty well everything is sold at twice the normal price, so the savings are nothing like what they're cracked up to be.

Or there are 2 very good travelodges, one brand new right in the centre of Chester city centre and rooms do come up on the travelodge sales.

And usually you need to book 2 nights rahter than one and you can never get the weekend you want. Far better to use topcahs/laterooms or premier inn sales or travelodge sales and save the deals for meals out

To be fair though, the Tower Bridge Hilton is always going to be one of the popular ones. We had a super 3 night break at the Newport Hilton last year mid week - Hilton often do have midweek availability during the summer holidays, being a business orientated chain.
    Hope is not a strategy.
  • Its becoming the same with Best Western too. We've done stacks of weekend breaks but finding our dates increasingly unavailable despite trying to book almost a year ahead.
  • Any luck with Marriott? My sister has enjoyed a few trip away using points and has no complaints.

We tried each of the hotel chains that you can use the vouchers with, searching for any hotel stay on one weekend in December. Each hotel was either "fully booked for Clubcard point stays" or the price almost doubled when you mentioned Clubcard...

Waste of time. Save it for restaurants.

    I've been Money Tipped!
It's the same when using the clubcard points on the Isle of Wight ferry, (Wightlink). You MUST use the expensive tarrif, and now the points are only worth 3x it's almost getting to the point where it's not worth using them. Very poor show.

I used my Tesco clubcard points and managed to convert them for a 2 night hotel stay at the MacDonald Swan Hotel in Grasmere where we stayed as part of our mini-moon. Though did book about 4 months in advance. Best of luck getting something.
