They won't have to go home early and give him a bath!He will be off work for upto 4 months. Unfortunately he has not worked with his current employer for a year so will only receive statutory sick pay whilst off.I made a mistake once, believeing people on the internet were my virtual friends. It won't be a mistake that I make again!0

Exactly my point but more eloquent0 -

Salary reduced as he will be on SSP.
So actually just an assumption on your part. Yes, his salary will be reduced to SSP. Added to the £30k she will be earning. Which is a damn sight more than a lot of families on this board manage to live on.DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244

Carers allowance is meant for people who care indefinitely for people who have been assessed as in need of long term help, at a certain level. It is supposed to be a replacement for an income,as in my case, but do not get me started.0

Thanks for the quick replies. !I wasn't asking in order to be greedy, only to make sure that we weren't missing out on something we might be entitled to. !Thought I was being honest from the outset by saying how much I earnt as figured that would probably be a big factor.!
I work !on average 60 hrs a week with travelling on top for this amount!!
A relative thought we might be able to claim and why should we miss out when thousands of others sponge the state dry!!
I thought this was after all!a friendly forum and to be slated for asking is ridiculous.!
My OH (27 yrs old) is in extreme pain most of the time. Depressed because of the pain and because of the weight he has put on due to !not being able to exercise as much as he used !to.!
I have to put his socks on for him before I go to work as he can't do this at the moment, however he has continued to work rather than become one of the Jeremy Kyle nation! !Why, because he knows sitting doing diddly squat at home will make him feel worse.!
He had been !self employed for many years but has had to give up what he loved doing because of no sick pay if he is unable to work. He failed to secure ESA last year when he had an operation and he was off for six months then.!
This was time off before the op as well as after.!
!
He has now taken a minimum wage job with the basic reason so that he will get some sort or sick pay whilst off. He would have hoped to get some company sick !pay but won't have been there long enough to qualify.!
Nannyone - thanks for the quick reply and easy explanation. Just the answer I needed
Sunnyone- I can only assume you !have had a hip resurfacing to be able to state they he will be on crutches next day. Lucky you if you were.!
He had a simple anthroscopy last year and wasn't able to get out of bed for four days whilst in hospital so you must have been very lucky.!
He will in actual fact be in hospital for 6 days after surgery. !Then on crutches for a further 5 weeks.!
As long as his first op goes ok, his other hip will be done two months later.!
His is having a BHR resurfacing if you would like to check it up. It is major surgery.!

Samsaragirl - I didn't write anywhere that we expected to get it.!
The QUESTION !clearly says ' Will I be able to? !NOT , 'How much can I get?
!
I don't want to dig an even deeper hole so I'll leave the subject there. Thank you all for your help !as well as your unnecessary comments.!
At least a few of you have managed to vent your anger on here tonight!!
I'm glad to have written something that incites others as much as some of the other things I read I here but just don't comment on!!
NB . Our toilet is upstairs and to be honest I wouldn't be happy leaving him upstairs ( far fetched i know but how would he get down / out quickly in a fire?) so I guess unless i fit an escape slide in, a bucket will have to do or I'll !borrow a portapotti off someone!!0 -
I apologise for all the exclamation marks in my last post, no idea why / how they all got there?
Appreciate it makes reading it a bit difficult0 -
On 30k a year, you should be able to pay for a carer! He might be able to claim some benefits if he cannot work, best checking on direct.gov, that is the only place to tell you, a simple google search would have rendered that for you.
Spare a thought for those who provide 30 hours of care to relatives, hold down a full time job and are on half your wages.0 -
Your OH should have an assessment by a physiotherapist or occupational therapist while in hospital to ensure that he is able to cope at home. This should allow you both to discuss your concerns and have an appropriate plan in place for his care before he comes out of hospital.
As previously mentioned you won't be able to receive Carer's Allowance however if your OH is has care or mobility needs due to ill health which won't be solved by his surgery and are going to last more than 6 months he may be eligible to claim Disability Living Allowance.
DLA is for care/mobility needs which have lasted at least 3 months and are going to continue at least a further 6 months. It is not income assessed and it can be claimed whether you are working or not.0 -

I know much more than you do about this procedure and it is not a major procedure, he will be expected to be up on crutches the day after and yes he will be on crutches for six weeks or so but he will certainly not be helpless on that time.
You dont have a clue about real disability, your OH will be slightly incapcisitated for a month and a half, you need to be asking how to cope in that time, you arnt entitled to any benefits and rightly so.0 -

Hear hear sunnyone! Disability is not something that is to be taken lightly, and it is something that has a long standing and profound effect on your life.0
