getting rid of an old boiler

Hi,
I've recently had my boiler replaced and the old one got left in the back garden. It is a 2-man job to lift, all the scrap merchants I've been in touch with won't collect domestic.
I'm not so bothered about making money, I just don't want to spend any getting rid of it.
So I'm hoping for a few suggestions - someone else must have had a similar situation before. I've already been in touch with the council, no response (and now I understand why there's so much trouble with flytipping in Newham). Would freecycling it be a good thing? Or is it too likely to end up getting picked up by cowboys?
Thanks

Your local tip should accept it, I would have thought, if you can get it there. In most areas I've lived in ( and I've been around a bit, ooh-eer missus ! ), the proper local council tip will have a designated skip for scrap metal, and as long as you turn up in a car - as opposed to a lorry or van - there is no issue. Obviously you need a largish car ( ideally estate ) and probably an extra pair of hands to help you load and unload - if you don't have a suitable car, do you have a friendly neighbour who'd help out for the bribe of a pint or two ?
My initial thought was a scrap metal dealer - the weight is largely due to cast iron, which I would have thought is worth something. But you've already said they're not interested.
Just a thought - if you're able to deliver it to a scrappy, he may give you something for it - worth a phone call, if you're in the position of delivering it to the tip anyway ?0 -
Your lucky in a way, we have 3 scrappies that come around a week with flatbeds, the latest now has a great big speaker blaring out the tune from Steptoe and Son! (yes really!) I work from home at times and this morning it was really embarrassing being on the phone to a client with that in the background.
They will have anything thats not got CFC gas in like a fridge.European for 3 weeks in August, the rest of the year only British and proud.0 -
I got £15 from my scrappy, two person lift into the car, they weigh the vehicle in, throw it out, weigh it on the way out. Stop at the office for your money. Hopefully it's nots cost £15 to drive to your scrappy.
Alternatively look in the Friday ad or gumtree.co.uk there is always people on there offering to collect scrap metal.0 -
i took ours up to my local tip,0

Or give freecycle a go, if it's anything like freecycle in our area, someone always takes it.0

I always leave any boilers I change outside the house. They are normally gone by the end of the day. Record so far.... about 4 minutes. We moved the boiler outside and then started to make a cuppa. The kettle hadn't even boiler before the p!keys rolled up outside.0
