How to request Voluntary Redundancy

Afternoon
Recently, our company has asked for voluntary retirements which they have had of couple of successes - rumour has it the next step would be voluntary redundancies, although this isnt the case yet.
Our sector is still over budget, and top heavy in the role I am.
I'm due to leave on 31st December for Maternity Leave, (well, i would take 3 weeks annual leave first before commencing materbity leave afterwards; not due until 22nd Jan) but have been thinking recently whether to ask for Voluntary Redundancy.
Although they do not know it yet, and have no reason to for a few more weeks, i really do not think i will be coming back. They are disbanding my dept due to a merger between another two depts so we wouldnt be needed, and i would be moved elsewhere. Where i dont know, as they need to 'try to find where we can put you first' Plus, ive worked here for 7 years without chance for promotion - i dont fancy another 7 years of the same. Im not challeneged and would love to re-train to do something else.
Does anyone know of a template I could use, or perhaps give me some advice on how to word a letter to them asking for VR? Im not sure whether to send it to the head of our sector, or to HR over the entire company.
Any advice appreciated, thanks

Look a the packages they offered the early retirers.
if very basic then there may not be much hope of a good redundancy package.
Looks like they may be playing it on the save side since you are going on maternity by what you say
Remember you accrue full holidays and another year service for notice and redundancy while on maternity so you need to factor that into any package where you leave early.
Any terms on enhanced maternity about returning to work you need to consider
Can you do any home based learning for a new career while keeping an opion open, a lot can change in a year.0 -
Depending on the relative cost of maternity pay vs redundancy they may well anticipate you not coming back & thus not give it to you - especially if you approach them & say you're interested in redundany. I'd be inclined to keep quite & see what happens.0
