No gas bill for 8 years

Hi I hope someone can help me as I,m very worried about this situation.
When I moved into my property, I realised that I was not being billed for my gas supply. I have tried on numerous occasions to contact the British Gas by phone, but as I have no reference number nothing happens. I have also tried to switch to another supplier including speaking to them on my mobile whilst next to the meter. I set up a payment to British Gas monthly. The only reply is that my reference number does not exist.
What can I do, can I be retropectively charged??? Any advice very much appreciated.

How do you know British Gas is your supplier?
Is it a new build or old property?
Which reference number are you referring to, your Meter Point Reference Number?
Have you tried contacting the gas transporter to confirm your address is registered and what the reference number is?
Yes they can back bill you if you cant prove that you made reasonable efforts to register as the customer.

Make sure you keep a record of your attempts to contact them to resolve this issue. Try and do it all in writing, and if you speak to people try and get their name. They will eventually realise and then they will suddenly land you with a bill for immediate payment as if you have been in the wrong. Evidence that you have made all efforts to make payments can be helpful when this happens.

To get your MPRN (meter point reference number which is attached to your property) then ring TRansco on 0870 608 1524. once you have that you can find out which company you are with (if any)

I hope you were wise enough to put some money aside as you will have to pay something at the very least
  • this might be a daft question but do you even have gas into the property?

Do you get an electricity bill?
