Additional note with Npower, due to the way they charge their tier one rates on the gas, at this time of year their actual charges for gas will be some of the highest of any of the company's as the sculpt the tier 1 rate so October to March they will charge you at the tier 1 gas rate for 4071kWh used, before the lower gas unit rate is charged, depending on current tariff if the £107 is already too much for your budget you maybe better served elswhere. SSE charge 625 a quarter at higher rate, Scottish Power, Eon, British Gas all charge their tier 1 gas rate at 670kwh a quarter and EDF charge a set unit rate with a daily standing charge, I have included npowers breakdown of their tier 1 gas unit rate month by month charging structure:

Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb – 882 units charged at primary rate per month
Mar – 272 units charged at primary rate per month
Apr, Oct – 271 units charged at primary rate per month
May, June, July, Aug, Sep – 46 units charged at primary rate per month
Annual total – 4572 units charged at primary rate per month

Actually I did have an email from them, but didnt bother looking at it!
I have spoken to npower now and apparenty my direct debit will be higher because of coming into the winter months. I dont know if i'd be better off switching? I am going to speak to them again today and see if there is a get out charge.

    thanks all for your replies

This does not sound right to me. You say you have been with npower for almost a year. When, exactly did you join them?

If it was say November then if the DD had been set correctly the balance on the account should be a vey low debit or even in credit.

They are either increasing the DD because there is more debt on the account than there should be (DD set too low and not reassessed correctly) or they have adjusted the anniversary date (when they expect the account to be at zero) to probably early spring. The latter may be what was meant by 'coming into the winter months'.

Carefully check their communications to you and see if they have given a date for the 'annual review'. The annual review date is I believe the date they use for accounts to be in balance.

If they have altered your anniversary date then you have a good reason for complaint and insisting the DD be reset.
