Advice on Disability and help you can get

Benefits information please
i'm going to try various help centers local to me for advice
what you can claim these days is a mine field knowing what you can and cant claim

my wife has just been awarded high rate mobility and care for 3 years due to serious illness caused by severe infection and having bacterial meningitis she has been in hospital for weeks and weeks but is now home and she's not good at all she will need years of rehab and help

i claim for my wife as were a married couple i get incapacity benefit,DLA Low rate care and high rate mobility in my own right and a industrial disease benefit

incapacity and industrial benefit are means tested so we get no help with rent / tax etc and my claim has no income support in it

i claim for no kids there grown up we have a Daughter and grandson at home and with the family etc there's plenty of help for my wife's needs

with this change in my wife's condition and benefits is there any extra things or premiums i can apply for
we have Community OT Involved physio,GP,Hospital,District nurse etc

we have been assessed as needing a stair lift and a grant has been applied for to help fund that
thats really no use as of now we've had a letter saying because of cuts there's a 6 month waiting list for that grant to be processed.uh!!!!

we need a lift like yesterday

she uses a zimmer frame, wheelchair, comode, cot sides on the living room bed etc and needs help with everything day and night

one thing i did find out from the council tax ppl which others might get use from
the other week is because she is a registered wheelchair user in an unadapted house and we have limited space
we qualified for a council tax assessment they came out and checked our home and that's come through they said most people
in this situation would go down one band level in what they pay but as were
in the lowest band anyway we got around an 11% reduction in the band A amount we pay not a lot but its £100+ reduction a year

any advice Welcome on benefits.grants etc
Thanks

From A wore out guy who's eyes have been well and truly opened to the sight of someone needing 24/7 care/help

ps we live in a 3 bedroom semi with a toilet and bathroom upstairs
she doesn't wont to move out as i dont this is our home and would prefer to adapt what we have

Sorry, I don't know enough to help with the benefits side, but I wanted to let you know that I understand the problems of caring for someone 24/7. It's exhausting no matter how much you love the person and you must try to make sure that you get breaks from the caring to look after yourself. This will benefit both you and your wife so don't think it is being selfish to need some time alone and away from the responsibility.
I feel for you and send you all the very best wishes.

Might be worth while trying to claim housing and ct benefits now due to a change in circumstances. There is a bigger allowance when you are getting DLA. So you may just be under the threshold for it. You don't claim you don't get. Pretty sure someone else might correct me tho :)

Your very mixed up on the council tax reduction, you are getting it because she is a using a wheelchair indoors, not because she is a registered wheelchair user, that dosnt exist, nor does living in an unadapted house come into it, its purely for wheelchair use indoors.

    thanks for the replys
a local Disability information service has been helpful
they said the wife would qualify for an enhanced disability premium rate as regards rent council tax reduction calculations because of the high rate care

i applied at the local office they said NO Nothing changes she gets a disability premium only and put it in writing

after masking numerous phone calls when i got home they now say Yes we should get some rebate
i wish people would know the rules/criteria better if i hadn't had pushed it we would have missed out

and someone who helps look after my wife 35hrs a week or more can claim a care benefit
    i'm looking into that

    Thanks

Is there a welfare rights worker attached to the hospitals you attend. If so they'd be worth contacting. Usually via the social work dept. They can help with all sorts of benefit issues.

Is that right, with a wheelchair you get a reduction in council tax? Just asking as my new one comes in a week or so and assume if true, it's a case of "trotting" down to the council and ask.
  • It to make sure disabled people don't pay more Council Tax because they needed a larger property due to their disability, If your home is eligible, your bill will be reduced to that of a property in the next Council Tax band down as someone earlier in the thread said.
