car insurance - elderly driver

Anyone know a specialist insurer for the elderly, other than AgeUK and Saga?

My (90 yr old) father was with AgeUK last year but they've switched from using Liverpool Victoria to Aegis. And his premium has gone from £400 to £900.

OH aged 81 was in same position. He was with InTune who used Liverpool Victoria. They no longer do car insurance and his renewal letter came with instructions to contact Age Concern for a quote. This was much more expensive.

He tried comparison sites and eventually dealt direct with Liverpool Victoria who gave the best quote.

Exactly the same scenario except LV don't offer car cover to over 85s!

I don't know LVs terms, so I'm just talking in general, but although some companies don't take on new customers over a certain age, they do continue to insure existing customers. If this applies to LV, you could argue with them that your father IS an existing customer.
  • Once you get over 90 premiums start skyrocketing. There isn't much you can do except for calling everyone who gives you a quote online and pleading for a reduced premium. The one advantage is that most insurers won't touch people in their nineties so you won't have to spend too long on the phone.

I wonder if there is anyone 100+ driving? Who insures them?

Apparantly the policy in question was with AgeUK - just 'underwritten' by LV.
So he would be a new customer with LV and therefore is over the age limit!

So AgeUK are happy to switch to a more expensive provider.
LV are happy to lose the customer(s).
Ageas ar happy to charge more than double the prvious insurer.

    And the elderly are 'scr*wed!

Or as AgeUK Financy Director Ms Mitchell said last year:
"older consumers (are being) forced to pay over the odds" (due to lack of competition).
