Ryanair emailed saying they won't refund tax for unused flight

I can see them justifying it, it's not like the automated letter sent out by banks. They've got to:

Open & read the letter
Send it to the right department to do the job
Someone else read it
Check that you didn't fly
Sign the cheque
Post it
Right up & file the report of what was paid to who & why.

So you've got the cost of their time, the on costs of employing them (employers NI, sick leave, Training (oh wait, this is RyanAir)) & the cost of their workspace.

On the other hand what would it cost them to defend an action in the Small Claims Court ? My bet is they would settle on the final hour.

I bet they wont. Thats what the wheelchair levy is all about.

Lets be honest, if you buy a bag of chips, decide not to eat them, inform the chippy you no longer want them, would you expect to be able to claim the VAT back on them.

To be honest, Ryanair are not the bad guys here. They are the victim of their own success, offering flights so cheap, they are almost disposable. Ive done it myself, £25 rtn to Milan, last minute decided I couldnt be bothered going.

I suggest just forget it.

Did you have any travel insurance?

If you did then have you considered a claim?
I don't know what the situation is if she didn't see a doctor as then it's only her/your word.
I still think it would be worth giving them a call though.

If you didn't have travel insurance then you should definitely get it in future.
If you need medical treatment abroad or need to be repatriated with a broken leg (10 seats plus a nurse) then it can be extremely expensive.
Don't think of travelling without it.

Ouch, sore one. Hope your mums better btw :-) ,still a fiver ew tax isnt going to make much impact on that amount is it? Thats the only bit you could claim even if there was no admin charge. Travel insurance is the only way, but even then if successful, you have to cover the first fifty quid or so.

I'm not sure that the small claims court have any jurisdiction over Ryanair who are an overseas registered company.

Well if OP wants to go to Ireland for his case then maybe.

It's rumoured that Irish judges are predisposed in favour of Irish companies when foreighners bring cases......

Well I've never heard that rumour personally, but it certainly wouldn't surprise me. But that's not for here..
