Friend is moving in to a house and wants a landline connected.
There is a line to the property.
1, Does she have to take BT line rental? If so will they be charged for connection?
2, If not can they go straight to IDnet.
3,Are IDnet any good? They charge for new lines but do they charge for a connection?
Thanks in advance

You need to say who the line is currently with.
If the line is dead (i.e. no dial tone), then a reconnection is required, which is chargeable.
No, they do not have to take BT line rental, they can select whoever they wish.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Thanks, not in the property yet,14th i think, also think its BT the supplier for the previous occs. Wont know if there's a dial tone until she gets in.
Anybody know if IDnet are any good? what i mean by that is the opposite of Primus. Are they Easily contactable and sort problems out with no hassle etc.A fool and their money are easily parted.0 -
I don't know about the phone side, but they've been our ISP for over a year and we've been very pleased.
Being a small company, you get a personal efficient service that you don't tend to get with the bigger companies.
From memory, we went with BT at first when we moved here as it worked out cheaper in terms of connection charges.
There's lots of good info and their website, and on the idnetters forum.0 -

I chose the Anytime lite package currently £14.29 as this suits me 5 hrs calls p/m no connection charges.Bt bill was appx £70 p/q (Anytime, mobile saver & rental) savings are made mainly on mobile connection charge as i make a lot of short mobile calls.
Have only contacted support once via there webmail page and had reply within 20 minutes followed by a phone call where my query was answered by a very friendly and helpful person.
Freephone and Geographic numbers available to contact them.
Bills are available to view online with a daily breakdown of type of calls/charges.
Support will be able to tell you about connection charges once you know how the line is.0 -
Thanks Steve, very helpful :TA fool and their money are easily parted.0

Hello
I am with Your Calls.net (https://www.yourcalls.net)
They are based in the UK, with no external/foreign call centres. I take their phone & BroadBand service, last bill was £26 including VAT. Breakdown, all inc. VAT is: -
Line rental: £10.47
Calls £ 2.30 (seriously)
Rest is BroadBand, including 2 GB extra download usage at £0.92 per GB.
Customer service is the best I have ever experienced from any company, anywhere. No exaggeration, they have twice bottomed-out a problem with my rural line, by sheer persistence and patience on the part of several agents.
If you want to check out an alternative and you have Internet access, I recommend them.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

Hi again, friend is in the property now and there is a dialling tone. IDnet have said they cant be sure if they could connect her without the £110 ish connection fee, the engineer would have to determine this.
Would it be worth going back to BT for the time being to avoid the connection fee or would BT try to charge this also.
Does she take a chance that IDnet will not charge her the connection fee?
Thanks in advanceA fool and their money are easily parted.0 -
BT also charges a connection fee - £129 (?) unless you take a long contract and/or their broadband, I think.
ISPs can find out from Openreach whether the work "should" be charged for connection and some ISPs (e.g. Plusnet) give you an assurance on screen one way or the other. Most, however, either charge every time in case Openreach bills them and/or to make profit.
If the customer is told "no charge", then the customer can't be charged later on.
IDNET have a good reputation, however their service was only on the BT Wholesale platform. So like many ISPs they were at the mercy of their supplier who has let them down quite spectacularly a couple of times in the last year. They're now trialling a different supplier (BE I think) and so have access to two different suppliers (like AAISP) which is good news.0 -
She finally went with Plusnet. Good deal £3.24 for 9 months broadband reverting to £6.49 after that. Connection for phone was free and done in two hours hours of ordering online with new number!!! £38 pound cash-back through quidco. Took the evening and weekend package which is free and the value broadband package which is promised to be up and running 8 days from ordering. She is pleased.A fool and their money are easily parted.0
