Anyone still using ie6?

Options
Apparently i still have internet explorer 6 installed, i kinda just like the user interface so much more and its more simpler, not interested in using the tabs in the newer versions as well.

Should i be looking to update to the latest version? I noticed a few web pages saying that i should update but they still work anyway.

Will all web pages eventually stop allowing people to use internet explorer 6?

Although a lot of people still use IE6, I have read that most web designers are no longer going to cater for it (think I read it on webhostingtalk.com). It is an old browser so I would suggest you update.

If you like the minimal look, take a look at Chrome - okay people say Google can spy on you, but is that any worse than Microsoft? (thats if they can anyway!)

IE6 will never be ban people from looking at sites (unless the web page maker puts code in to stop it themselves) but your viewing pleasure may not be the best if the page has code supported only by the more modern browser.

I have moved from Firefox to Chrome and enjoying it a lot more, never a great fan of IE but even Firefox has turned into an application that eats memory for the fun of it!

You can keep IE6 if you really feel the need... just don't use it. ;)

Choose From Opera, Firefox...... Not keen on Google...they install too much rubbish on your PC.

The main reason to update IE6 is that it makes you more vulnerable to infection.

The profile of the most commonly infected user is one running Windows XP, using Internet Explorer 6, with outdated versions of Sun Java and Adobe Reader.

Outdated software have known vulnerabilities which usually have been patched for ages. I've seen it claimed that most successful exploits are from vulnerabilities that have been long-patched; malware authors are well aware that people don't bother updating so still write for old vulnerabilities.

    1) Update to IE8 (XP) or IE9 (Win 7) as the newer versions are more secure. IE6 is hopelessly out of date, not standards compliant and insecure.

    2) Better still also install and use Firefox, Chrome or Opera

Microsoft will withdraw support of IE6 at the same time as it withdraws support for XP, sometime in 2014

Building websites with IE6 compatibility is and always has been a pain. Wordpress (upon which many sites are built) dropped support for it last May. It's a 10 year old browser now and a "standard" that dear old Micro$oft failed to enforce upon us.
Ditch it for IE8 (assuming you run XP) or one of the fine alternatives already mentioned.

Here's a good reason to get rid of IE6, with stats taken from a malware server by security researchers in May 2011 - over 26% of users still using IE6 who came across this exploit kit were infected:

The stats aren't that encouraging for FF either really, as at the time (May 2011) Firefox 4 was the current. Makes you wonder what inducements Google are offering the malware authors as Chrome users were barely touched ;)

From September 2010, 45% of IE6 users who encountered this malware server with 'Neosploit Exploit Kit' were infected; this is the control panel stats page as accessed by security researchers:

  • I still have it on my system. I like the OP don't like the layout of newer versions. I don't use IE to browse the web, it's only for logging into my router. I use Firefox mainly and occasionally Opera. Firefox isn't the latest version, I use 3.6 because I prefer the interface. I don't like the new layout all browser makers are using. Catering exclusively for widescreen displays which I don't use, so why should I use browsers that have crap layouts that don't cater for my needs. I have tried many other browsers and always go back to Firefox 3.6.
