Are We Entitled To Housing Benefit

Hope someone can help with this. We are selling our house and will be moving into rented property for a while. When i was on the dole before i was allowed to claim JSA because we had just sold a house and the money was in the bank, they disregard the money for 6 months as its to buy another property, after 6 months you are expected to live off it as its classed as savings then. This time im working, its only 24 hours a week and as such dont get working tax credits or any other benefits apart from £18 a month council tax benefit. This means i will struggle to rent anywhere with the money im earning. Does anyone know if the money will be disregarded for 6 months and will i get any help with the rent and if so roughly how much. Thanx in advance

  • I suspect the reason why you think the proceeds from the house-sale were disregarded was because you were entitled to claim "Contribution Based" JSA, which anyone is entitled to regardless of savings if they have paid enough NI contributions in the previous two years. After six months this is then replaced by "Income based" JSA where all savings are considered.

I dunno whether you will be able to hold onto your money and get the tax-payer to contribute towards your rent now that you're only working 24 hours a week. I suspect it will all depend on what full-tome work you've done since the last time you claimed JSA.

"Working class credits "???? Wow, are they worth more or less than "middle class credits "???

If you've money in the bank & can pay your rent why would you expect the rest of us (taxpayers) to pay your rent for you?

When i was on the dole it was for 5 months, bearing in mind ive worked since i was 16 and am nearly 48 (over 30 years of contributions). A mortgage dosent get paid by being on the dole. Ive never claimed anything apart from those 5 months, i have a wife and although they are grown up now (2 children, that the government apart from family allowance have never paid a penny towards). I go to work (and because i only work 24 hours cant get any help, apart from a bit of council tax benefit) and am only £30 a week better off than being on the dole. By the way i am a "TAXPAYER" like yourself, and have been for 30 years, and dont expect you to keep me just a little help off the government while i find a house.

Don't forget the free education, tax relief, free healthcare, free dental care, free eye care etc etc etc.

Everybody who reaches your age will have been a "TAXPAYER" for 30 years plus, even those who are unemployed.

The benefits system isn't like a savings account, it's a safety net. The government, with some justification, have decided that if you have a few thousand in the bank, it would be unreasonable to expect some who don't to pay your bills.

£120? A small price to pay for having to deal with the problem of a bank account now bursting at the seams. Just another problem you wouldn't have had if you were a council tenant.

Yes it does. Google "Support for Mortgage Interest" - indeed you'll find a few threads about it on this site.

You know what, i find this site helpful for most things and can usually find the answer. I asked a question i dont want a debate i just wanted to know if i was entitled to any help, i have every intention of buying another house, thats all i asked. As usual you have people (wether it be jeoulosy, who knows) wanting to treat you like a leach on the state, if i wanted to do that i would have my vasectomy reversed bang out a few more children and then pack in work and then let the tax payer suffer. The reason i dont want to use the money to pay rent is ive worked damned hard, putting in many hours to give my children an inheritance. In fact dont bother answering any more as i will not come back to this thread. PS thanks for the help
