road tax for '06' car with CO2 figure over 225g/km

I am looking to buy a large engined estate or 4x4 which is likely to a CO2 figure over 225g/km (for towing a horse box).

Accordingly, I woudl expect it to be in road tax bands L or M costing £445 or £460 per year respectively.

The DVLA website however states that "Band K includes cars that have a CO2 figure over 225g/km but were registered before 23 March 2006" (http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012524)

Band K is £260 per year.

It would seem therefore if one buys a vehicle with a CO2 figure over 225g/km but on a '06' registration or older than you only pay £260 a year.

The reason I am a bit suspicious is because Google searches reveal that the DVLA gave out incorrect info as to the K, L, M banding divisions previously. Also news reports from 2008-10 stated that teh transition of such cars from band K to L/M woudl be done in 2010. Also autotrader shows such vehicles in L or M bands.

Anyone have such a vehicle / experience to assist?

Thanks.

If it was registered before 23rd March 2006, there is nothing above Bank K.

However, there is nothing to stop the government (any) from re-banding high emissions cars in the future.

Also, don't forget that high emissions = high fuel consumption. They are directly proportional, assuming engine is working properly and well maintained.

Anything over 225g/km will probably use at least 20p of fuel per mile, as a guide.

    Thanks for the reply.

I know what the DVLA website says but given the DVLA were caught out giving inaccurate advice re the banding of vehicles previously (see google) then wanted to check does anyone actually have a car that falls into this category and what tax do they pay?

As for the high fuel consumption I wil just have to live with that if I want to tow 1.5 ton + of horse and trailer.

    Thanks

I've got a 2002 Audi which emits 295 CO2s which falls into band K and I paid £245 last year and will pay £260 when I get my next tax disc in December.

This 'exemption' applies to cars registered from March 2001 to March 2006.

There was quite a lot of annoyed people when the govt initially announced a few years ago that the £400 bands would apply retrospectively to cars registered from 2001 on. The backtracked on that plan, so I can't see them increasing it to those levels again.
