Faulty Gas Meter
I've just found out my gas meter is faulty so the reading has been the same for the last two years! I only found this out when I rung Npower to get some of my credit back, it was then they realised the reading hadn't changed. Where do I stand? I know the meter is there responsibilty to maintain, they have taken readings and I have supplied readings (but didn't notice it was the same) so can they charge me for the last two years of gas? They said about arranging the meter to be replaced but didn't mention about taken any money.

My expectation is that they'll ask you to take readings over a period, say three months, and then they'll then use this to estimate your usage backwards - charging at the prevailing rates throughout that time. I really cannot believe there is a get out that if the meter breaks, you get the gas for free.0

You (or the previous occupier) should have old bills showing gas readings when the meter was okay.
NPower will probably do estimates of what the readings should have been based on previous readings for the property before the meter stopped working.
After the new meter is fitted, take a start reading and then take a reading each month for the next year so that you can show your actual usage over a whole year. If these readings show their estimates were inaccurate, ask for a bill adjustment. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. As the others have said they will estimate, knowing npower they may not bother though.Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

Hi gra01473,
I have spoken to our team who deal with these queries and they would need to look into the account before they can say what will happen next.
Can you send me your account details to forumresponse@npower.com and I'll get on to this straight away.
