Can We Get Housing Benefit

Hope someone can help with this. We are selling our house and will be moving into rented property for a while. When i was on the dole before i was allowed to claim JSA because we had just sold a house and the money was in the bank, they disregard the money for 6 months as its to buy another property, after 6 months you are expected to live off it as its classed as savings then. This time im working, its only 24 hours a week and as such dont get working class credits or any other benefits apart from £18 a month council tax benefit. This means i will struggle to rent anywhere with the money im earning. Does anyone know if the money will be disregarded for 6 months and will i get any help with the rent and if so roughly how much. Thanx in advance

The money from sale of the house are you going to be buying another?
How much you get depends on your income, your age, who else will be living there

As we have no mortgage all the money will be ours, but we are going to buy another house, we just havent found one yet. We are in our 40s,there are just me and my wife, i get approx £190 a week
  • wouldnt it be simpler to do what most people do and wait till you find another house as part of the selling/buying process

Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit are means tested (as I think you know)so your savings will be taken into account.

My only suggestion would be to put whatever savings you have into an instant access account (possibly one that pays monthly interest) and that, at least, will give you a bit of extra money each month. May not be much (depending on your capital) but as they say 'every little bit helps!'

Otherwise, it's a question of upping your income or lowering your outgoings. (Lots of forums for both strategies)

    Good luck!

PS Don't forget to inform Council Tax office when you move.

Yes, I saw the threads you refer to.

It is very difficult sometimes not to be judgemental and certainly I was surprised to see a few of the threads as generally posters on that forum are very welcoming and knowledgeable.

Perhaps they are having a 'bad day'.:)

Well, don't be a leech on the state then.

The question was asked, why did you feel that the public purse should pay your rent when you had the entire proceeds of your mortgage free house sale sat in the bank. Then you has a hissy fit and flounced off.

Just thought I'd clarify that for you. No need to thank me.
