I got my second only negative feedback in 12 years this week and first for over 6 years.

Item was lost in post (buyer didn't check with local sorting office) I gave buyer full refund as soon as they asked which was after 2 weeks and said that in my experience they usually turn up and if it did I would post it out free of charge for item and postage.
They left me negative feedback after sending an email saying I was lying about having posted it! Item turned up at my house on Saturday so I guess it had been in sorting office for 3 weeks. Don't think I will be sending it back to them.

You can't win with some buyers. Just rise above it!
    True, but...

If they have had a refund they have probably gone elsewhere by now, so obviously unless you want to keep to your original idea and send it out free of charge (which might help placate the buyer and get the negative revised, always a good thing to do IMO so it doesn't wreck your other sales) then move on emotionally (not necessarily the same thing about "rising above it", as that implies they were in the wrong, which they weren't), respond reasonably and forget about it.

Some buyers consider a transaction where they don't get an item negative in itself - I'm not one of them but they do exist. If you're going to do this with good grace, I would stop with the cutting comments and butter him up. Loss of business or loss of sales as a private seller due to a neg can be quite significant, so it might be worth the extra postage to get rid of it.

I wouldn't ask someone to look at a sorting office, it's a bit of a palaver for a buyer to know where theirs is or who to contact, some don't answer queries and just leave the phone unanswered, and it's a bit hit and miss. If you're used to doing this perhaps offer to do it for them; otherwise you can't really make them jump through hoops for something that's out of their control. Some people act as if buyers have all the time in the world to go chasing things up or posting things out - that's essentially what some of them think they're paying you to do as it's your responsibility to get the item to them safely.

Never forget it's not you who's doing the buyer a favour - it's the opposite way round. Treat them as you would expect to be treated anywhere you spend money.

There are guidelines for feedback removal and I doubt this can be fitted into any category. If buyer expected delivery promptly in line with the ebay delivery times it might not even be unfair.

but surely its worth ringing to get advice from ebay
  • Unfortunately you probably don't have a leg to stand on if eBay is anything like Amazon.

Buyers in general are just stupid so extra comments on a listing will just not be read so as far as eBay are concerned you dispatched to late.

I agree with you but in general this will not be classed as "unfair feedback"

I'm a buyer and a seller and in general I'm not particularly stupid.:)

I agree though, buyers don't bother reading vacation notices added at the bottom of a listing.

    It's a self- inflicted wound.
