Cashing Cheques in US

Hi all.

again I apologize if this is in the wrong thread, please feel free to move if neccesary.

I have received a cheque from the US for a small sum ($20) that will, no doubt cost more in bank charges than the cheque is worth. However, we are off to the states at the end of the mont hand I was wondering whether it is possible to cash it there? I seem to recall from a previous visit that you can get cheques made out to you cashed in certain stores, but I'm not 100% sure on this. Can any of you wise travellers help me out wit heither confirmation or denial on this please?

Cheers

  • I had an American cheque payable to me and I took it to a branch of the same bank who cashed it for me, with my passport as proof of who I am.

This was a few years back so dont know if it has changed at all.
