Car Insurance screwup - anything I can do?

My car window got smashed (for no reason, by vandals). Via my insurance I called their recommended autoglass people (I think RAC) - they came and fitted a plastic cover, but I then had a tiresome 5 week saga of them not having the right glass in stock, not calling me back when they said they would, claiming they were passing it to the night team who then knew nothing about it, etc.

Eventually, and obviously this is my first mistake - I gave up for the time being. I was really busy in work, I wasn't driving at all except maybe once every couple of weeks, and I was bored and aggravated after 8 or more calls to the glass company. I decided to forget about it for a while, one less annoyance in my life.

Fast forward a few months later, I am driving a bit more, the plastic cover is slipping and has gaps round the edges which I cover in duct tape, and I want my damn window fixed!

At this point I realise that not only have I changed insurance companies (better deal on renewal), but I also seem not to have windscreen cover ticked... the uninsured quote for repair is now around £160 (it was £50 excess previously). I have no idea how I failed to tick windscreen cover, with 6 broken windows over 6 years I always want it.

Given it's now a couple months since my old insurance expired, is there anything I can do except stump up the cash?

Thanks for any advice - I suspect I'm biting the bullet on this one.

The change of insurers / lack of windscreen cover with new insurer is irrelevent. The repairs are paid for by the insurer at the time of the incident, not a subsequent insurer.

Go back to your original insurers and get them to apply pressure on the glass repair company. If they get nowhere, try the opposition glass fitters. Most insurers will deal with the two main firms, Autowindscreens and Autoglass.
