Repairing electric window on peugot 306 - how much??!!

Options
The window on the driver's side is fully wound down and won't go back up! When I try to wind it up, the motor isn't even whirring...I've got a plastic bag covering it at the moment... going to ring garage but wanted to prepare myself for the cost. Any ideas? The car is about 10 years old. I've had it for a few months and never needed to take it to the garage which is why I'm clueless about the cost!

Edited to include more details..the passenger window is working fine. On the driver's side, the mechanism is whirring when I push the button to wind the window down, but no whirring when I push the button to send it back up! The window has been a bit dodgy for a while (reluctant to go up or down when I push the button0.
Cheers in advance.

You want to get to a scrappy and find a replacement there. I haven't a clue how much it will be via the garage except a lot!!

If you have no joy you can try google there are various search engines that will locate second hand parts for you.

Before you do anything, have the garage check the alternator by measuring the current across the battery terminals. If the alternator isn't charging the battery properly, the car will cut out the electric window motor to preserve the current so that important things like starting the car and the headlights will work for as long as possible. (Happened to me in my 306). An alternator was about £110 fitted (and £100 to buy without trade discount).

I've just seen that the motor is whirring so it won't be the alternator.

It's likely to be the motor, which I would suggest would be £70 + 1 1/2 hours' labour so about £120 - £150 all in.

thanks David HM. When I read it your post, it didn't seem to match what was wrong with my car, so i edited my original post so that the problem was clearer!

    £150..eek.

The window motor with regulator is between £68.47 and £72.73 + VAT (depending on which side and whether it is a three or five door car) from http://www.eurocarparts.com - so £80.45 to £85.45 all in. Hopefully your mechanic will get trade discount on something like that, which he might pass on to you. (If you're in Cardiff I can recommend an excellent mechanic who does).

On top of that I would guesstimate 1 1/2 hours for the job for labour but I'm not a mechanic so take what I say with a pinch of salt.

Naturally a second hand part from a scrapyard should be a little cheaper (£40?) but you'd have to find a yard that would either break the car in advance or remove it for you; if you can remove it from the old car without damaging it the chances are pretty good you can get it in yours too.

You've been really helpful. this is my first post. Was hoping my first post would be more exciting. now need to learn how to quote other people's posts AND take car maintenance course (as recommended in Martin's thrifty ways book!).

youwhat - PM sent and I am not a mechanic - hence the "take everything with a pinch of salt" above.

OK so the motor is working. It will be the teeth either on the motor cog but more likely the teeth on the window mechanism.

Take the door panel off and have a look. There will be screws in the handle. This is a job (assuming tha's what it is) you should be able to do yourself. If nothing else you should be able to get the window up!

If it's only whirring down but not up then it sounds like the motor only works in one direction, is it not possible that it's the switch? It might be possible to swap the switch with the passenger side to test it and get the window back up.

exactly what I would do...Peugeot switches have a habit of getting mucky inside...swap the switches over and see how you fare.
