Can I seek compensation from my former insurer?

    You are not responsible for making sure that someone collects a payment which you have authorised them to make.

    They are responsible for taking it, and contacting you if they are unable to do so. But it appears they did, by writing to you cancelling the insurance. (Presumably giving 7 days' notice as well?).
