Avoiding Council Tax whilst building?

Hi

I'm just after some hints and tips from 'those in the know' who've done this before!!!

I may be buying a property in May time, that I plan to rent out.

However, I shall be 'doing it up' prior to renting - this will involve pretty much redecoration in all rooms, new carpets etc, and 'tarting up' everywhere.
I will also be fitting a whole new bathroom and kitchen.

Now I've seen that the property can be exempt from the dreaded council tax for up to 12 months whilst 'extensive building works' are carried out, making the property 'uninhabitable'

Quick question is - what's the classification of 'uninhabitable'? - If I go in on day 1 and rip out the toilet, bath, sink, and kitchen units, will this classify the house as 'uninhabitable'??
How do I best get the place exempt from tax for 12 months??
Do the council send a bod round to check the place out??

And advice would be great.

BTW - I'm going to be doing this place up myself, in my spare time, and hence won't be in a rush to complete it - that's why I want 12 months exemption....

  • I just rang up and said the place had no furniture....but they only granted exemption for six months. They did not send anyone round AFAIK (they could have looked through the windows!).

    Don't know if you can get a year.

  • Yes, no furniture and not lived in buys you 6 months, but 'extensive' building works can buy you 12 months....
