Thanks everyone, I will pass your comments onto my OH!

One thing I will say is that as I had no idea of the oil capacity - I only added a litre at a time - leaving the engine running for a while to circulate the oil - made sense to me!

The lesson will teach me not to trust anyone else with my car!!! I have previously replaced radiators, topped up with anti-freeze/coolant, air filters, spark plugs, numerous oil top ups (small ones when the level drops slightly), even a side window when I was broken into once! Never had a problem before.

Unfortunately, my OH offered and as I am always being lectured by just about everyone I know that I need to stop being a tom-boy - I let him loose on the car!!!

The reading is about one inch over the top of the indicator on the dipstick - so well over....

It was a moment of weakness and I am clearly going to pay for it! Actually CORRECTION - OH is paying for it! :D

cut the side out of the old container, shove it under the sump, put long rubber gloves on, undo sump plug, and drain about 3.5-4 litres out of it, and screw the plug in quick.

Just make sure the oil is cold, as opposed to hot like when you normally drain the oil out.

Sure, as Albertross says, it is a simple matter to put an oil container under your car (put down a big sheet of cardboard first) and undo the sump drain plug (look for a rounded black metal box on the bottom of the engine with a single bolt in a convienient position for draining oil from. Use the right ring spanner or socket, undo it, let about 3 - 4 litres out and screw it back in. The only problem you might run into is the drain plug might not be a hex head it might be a recessed hex or square hole and you would need the right "bit" to do the job.

But if the garage you are booked into isn't too far away, you might aswell let them do it as the damage has been done now.

Its with the local garage now. He had a quick look, the level is about an inch over the max level. He said it should be OK as I hadn't travelled very far with the car like it.

With the high winds, etc, I am quite glad I didn't make it to Cheshire after all this week.;)
