why does claim on building insurance affect contents ins

Hi,I'm new to this so hope I get it right!!!
I have had my renewal quote back for building and contents with Churchill for which they want £432.48 plus £25.44 legal protection.
I had a claim for subsidence with them over 18 months ago which is still pending due to tree already cut down but awaiting repairs and redecoration which I put on hold for 3mths due to personal probs.
By the way doing my own internal redecoration means I will NOT have to pay out the £1,000 excess as it's less than what the builders quoted to repaint one double bedroom!!! :j
As the claim is still unresolved it was impossible to find another insurer to take me on, so Churchill have had me over a barrel as they say for the last year!
However when I called them this morning to say I didn't want legal protection and asked for a quote for just building cover,
the guy didn't know what to say so put me on hold while he went to ask a manager. He came back saying that I would find it difficult to find someone to insure me as i have had a claim and would have to declare this,to which I replied I have 9 yrs no claim on my contents cover which is clearly stated on my renewal so why should that be effected He couldn't answer that so went off again and reluctantly gave me a new price of £267.12 thats a whooping £165.36 for my contents cover
My policy has now been taken off of the automatic renewal system and I was hoping to find a cheaper quote, however I have called another 3 insurers just to ask if the claim would effect the contents cover and one said NO but the other two have said yes and that they would not cover me!
Has anyone else had this problem and if so what was the outcome?

Subsidence issue does affect Contents. Directly if alternative acccomodation is partly provided by Contents cover under the claim. It is also a risk to Insurers for the same reason. i.e. if there was another subs issue and you had to move out for a long period.
Normally following a subs claim, you are stuck with the same company for a number of years. Other companies won't be keen to offer Contents cover at a competitive rate.
The company that said NO it won't affect you are wrong. Try phoning them again and speaking to someone else. The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.0
