My 7yr old car has a fair bit of rust at the bottom of the doors. The paint work seems to be bubbling up. Not really sure why but is there a way of stopping it spreading which can be done easily.

thanks for any advice you may be able to give.

Short answer in no I'm afraid.

Check the drain holes in the bottom of the doors are clear.
    What car is it?

If the area is small, might be worth rubbing it down and using some touch-up paint. Use a small wire brush to remove any rust first. At least this will stop it getting any worse. I had to do this to the top corner of one of the doors on my car.
  • Someone will be along in minute to tell us that modern cars don't rust, they'll be the ones who never look underneath at the unpainted suspension parts, exhausts and brake pipes then.

First of all get the door cards off to see whats happening inside.

If it's bubbling from inside, perforated, and it sounds like it with paint bubbling, then it will need to be cut out and repaired properly first of all, depending on model and how bad they are it might be easier and cheaper to get second hand doors and bolt them on if you can find them in your colour.

If it's just outside surface rust, caused by the door bottoms being scraped over the path when the doors are open, or untreated stone chips, then rubbing down, priming and painting is the answer.

Either way once painted it might be an idea to get the door cards off and Waxoyl the insides of the doors to help prevent further corrosion from inside...Waxoyl can't repair whats already rotten but it's good for stopping good metal getting rusty especially in damp non abrasion areas like insode doors.

Sounds like it could be worth inspecting the rest of the car well if the doors are that bad, if it's just the doors a handy little one or two man band bodyshop might be able to sort this out for you unless you're handy at welding, filling, sanding to perfect and painting.

    Easy clean fix it isnt.

There is a product called Krust that can kill rust. But first if rust is bad rub down with wet n dry paper. Apply car paint primer and then appropriate colour for car. But if you say its bubbling sometime the rust is coming from behind the other side which is harder to get at.

If it is a common car, the best and cheapest solution for a proper fix that won't show rust again in a few months would be go to a scrapyard and buy a rust free door in the same colour.
