I had a budget of 10-12k - so was looking at an older s2000 or a Mk3 2.0 roadster coupe (the one with the folding hard top). Mazda is only 160bhp compared with the 240 of the s2000, but decided that the mx-5 was the better car for me.

Superbly reliable cars, IME, chap to buy and run and with good supplies of parts, even for older models and imports, thanks to enthusiastic owners who keep alive a variety of specialist suppliers as well as enthusiasts' clubs.

Mine is a Japanese import and even the most obscure spares are 24 hours away - usually at sensible prices, too.

Having now run one for a few years as a second car, I'm kicking myself for all those years I stupidly dismissed them as 'hairdressers' cars'.

Plus, if power really is an issue they are very easy to tune, My Mk1 is currently running 260bhp in a car weighing 900kg.
