Welsh shoppers are no longer given green clubcard points for reusing bags "due to the 5p charge" I was told today.
The scheme still applies in the rest of UK.....

They kept that one quiet!

Tesco FAQs:
Will you still be giving Green Clubcard points?Yes – except in Wales where the bag levy in now in place - these are an important means of encouraging customers to reduce their use of carrier bags.

You can still get a Nectar point per re-used bag in Sainsbury's though :T

There is no reason why Tesco can't continue giving points in their Welsh stores for own bag use. The fact that in Wales there's an additional incentive to take your own bags doesn't stop Tesco giving their incentive.

Tesco are doing very nicely out of Welsh shoppers not only do they under get to keep the new 5p cost of bags but just for good measure they give out fewer points. I've always thought of Tesco as being penny pinchers but this proves it.

Extract from their response to my e-mail:
"We introduced Green Clubcard points to encourage the re-use of bags. Now that the Welsh Assembly Government has introduced its own charging policy, we want to get fully behind that approach in Wales. We believe that continuing an alternative approach at the same time as introducing a charge would be confusing for our customers."

How thick do they think we are?

Customers shopping in Welsh stores will no longer receive Green Clubcard Points instead the proceeds will be invested in conservation projects through RSPB Cymru.

Green Clubcard points can still be earned in Wales for recycling inkjet cartridges or mobile phones, and by using Tesco home efficiency products such as our insulation service.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact us about this. We always monitor feedback, so I am grateful you have been in touch"

Tesco aren't meant to keep the 5p all the revenue from bags is meant to be paid to charity.

A mate does home deliveries for them and he said that they dont charge for the bags used to deliver internet shopping. It's run from a central system and they can't set it up to charge customers in Wales but not the customers in the rest of the country. For the time being they are paying 40p per internet shop in Wales to cover the use of bags.

I contacted Tesco about this and they said they had stopped green points because the Welsh government had told them too. I contacted the Welsh government who said Tesco were lying and they have nothing to do with Tesco policy. Seems like a big money making scheme for Tesco and I've stopped going there so much. Fruit and Veg is much cheaper in Cardiff market anyway and they give me a bag:o
    Tesco: £1361.19, Vanquis: £2644.73, Very: £563.08, Next: £1636.95, M&S: £1049.92. As of 5th February 2024. Slava Ukraini

    ...

Shops can keep the costs and it is suggested that the profit can go to charity, but there is no compulsion to actually do so - the law is toothless.
Tesco is donating the "net proceeds" to RSPB, but retaining the rest to cover costs ... even though the bags are given away free in the rest of the UK. I suppose every little helps line the coffers :lipsrseal

They still have the bag recycling covers outside Tescos at Fforestfach advertising green points -

SAINSBURYS STILL GIVES POINTS FOR BAG RE-USE ... oh, sorry, I've said that before!
