Talk Talk No Dial Tone

Grrrr, no dial tone, no online help, no apparent problems at the exchange.

I received a call yesterday morning, got back from the school run, no phone, but internet fine.

I'm now on hold ~ on my mobile, so expecting high call costs ~ but I'm not expecting much from them, as the automated system had no record of my number.

Any ideas?

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

First thing you need to do is remove the faceplate from the master socket & connect a different phone. This will rule out the possibility of a faulty phone or internal wiring.
If the is still no dial tone, the the problem is in the PSTN exchange.Your broadband will still work as it's split off from the phone circuit as it enters the exchange,so the fault is after the split.
If you're phone is with Talk Talk, then they need to send a BT Wholesale or Openreach engineer to the exchange to fix the fault, depending on where the fault lies.

  • On BT circuits it IS possible for the broadband to work with 1 core of the pair that comes into your house broken somewhere between the exchange and your BT master socket.

I had this with one wire broken in the local PCP street box. So I had no dial tone, while the broadband work (albeit badly).
It does depend on which of the two wires that makes up your incoming pair is broken..so the BT man told me.

So it is not necessarily at the exchange somewhere.
Note that this example is where BT is the phone provider and the broadband is from another supplier.

Tis fixed, DH had a fiddle with the wires entering the house, and one is loose. Talktalk were useless.

    HI Gravitytolls,

If the issue was on the external line it is not advisable to conduct any changes yourself. The external line is the responsibility of Open Reach to maintain and repair as necessary.

If you make any changes to the external line should any future issues occur this may be evident to an engineer and as such charges would be applicable for the visit. Had you have not made any changes to the line and this had broken without any accidental damage or negligence of the Open Reach wiring then TalkTalk would be responsible to raise this to Open Reach for resolution for you and this would not have attracted any Time Related Charges. Can you confirm if you are still experiencing any line issues?

    Regards
