Does It Cost To Cancel A Cheque?

I recently sold something on ebay, the buyer sent me a cheque which I sent to Santander using a deposit envelope that I handed in at the Post Office.
It has been almost 2 weeks but the cheque has not arrived in my account yet. I phoned the bank and they said that I should check with the person who sent the cheque to see if the cheque has been debited (presumably to the wrong account), and if not, ask them to cancel it and send me another.
Since it was less than £6, I need to know if that would cost them anything, if it does I will just post them their item as it won't be worth paying any extra fees for such a small amount.

It depends on the circumstances, if you state what you have said on here (basically it seems to have gotten lost in the post) then some banks don't charge.
Otherwise there's normally a £10 charge.
It's best to contact the senders bank and ask (or rather, the sender should)0 -
If the cheque has not been cashed ask the sender to cancel it at his bank - lost cheques normally do not incur a fee.
Then give him your sort code and account number and provided both of you have faster payment enabled accounts the money will be with you in about 2 hours.0 -
Hang on a minute, firstly why should you do all the monkey work when your cheque has quite clearly been lost via incompetent Post office or Santander!
Sorry but you need to complain to Santander, you've done nothing wrong here.
By the way generally there would not be a charge for a lost/stolen cheque.0 -

OP, I'd leave your buyer alone on this one and pursue it via Santander.
It will be quicker and easier for everybody if they simply banged £25 compensation in your account and had done with it.
If the £6 materialises later, so be it.0 -

I think most banks charge. I think the Abbey used to charge but Santander do not currently charge for stopping cheques.0 -
If a cheque is lost it would be unfair to make a charge.
In this case I would make the bank pay for what appears their mistake in losing the cheque (assuming OP has a receipt).0 -
For Lloyds TSB they charged £10 for cancelling a cheque, the only time it was waived was if it was lost in the post.Feb 2024:
CC1 6537.66
CC2 7804.45
CC3 4221.17
CC4 2053.68
CC5 989.30
Loan 1 3686.44
Loan 2 5275.22
Total £30,567.920 -
The thought of banking with a Santander/Post Office combination should fill people with abject horror0
