Trying to clean my laptop before disposal. Googling I found Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) was recommended, but had to be downloaded onto a floppy disk.

My floppies are 1.4MB high density - and weren't large enough.

Any other suggestions? (apart from the hammer option which I might resort to).

    disposal or sale?

keep it.? - if it's working, £4 for a usb hard disk caddy gives you a backup device

hammer/drill is much faster than dban (which can be written to cd if you wish)

beware flying glass if you smash it so much the cover comes off.

If you don`t end up keeping the drive you could try to create a bootable USB drive and run DBAN from there?

download ocdb, its a tool you can use one you stick the hard drive out but d/l it before you do you can run it from the lappy then choose the nuke drive settings (the tools you mentions are included free with that program)

warning before nuking all the drive make sure you got everything off it you want to keep as it will clear the whople hard drive back to factory settings like a new Hdd.

best tool i ever used for restoring/deleting/replacing O/s which have errors and some more things all in one free program.

    hope that helps

bear in mind if you want to sell the lappy, it will fetch more if it's got the operating system installed and working. By all means delete all your personal data, then use CCleaner's free space wiper tool to do what it says on the tin.

If you DBAN it, you wipe the lot.....so unless you then want to re-install and do all the updates.....
