Is it possible to get last-minute flights to US in October?

Hi, I'm going to San Francisco during October half-term for my brother's wedding. Have been looking at costs and booking now its about £800 for my son and I.

I'm tempted to leave it till nearer the date as looking as flights in Jan/Feb they're about £500 which is quite a significant saving. But not sure if thats just the time of year,

Has anyone else gone to the US off season and got a cheap deal on flights? Or should I just bite the bullet and book tickets now to be on the safe side?!

where are you going from, Virgin are showiing flights available from London Heathrow - San Francisco 20/27 October for £495 each return

bearing in mind that it is half term for prices....

I want to fly from any of the London airports - I could fly a few days before half-term but not sure if it would make a difference.
