Housing Benefit and drop of income

Hi, We currently receive HB for us and our 11month old twins, my husband works full time.

He has been diagnosed with a hernia today, and needs an op, he also has a bad knee and has been signed off work for 6 weeks, but may have to wait up to 10 weeks for the actual op.

He can only get 4 weeks sick pay from his work, then it will be ssp for any time after that.

If that happens and he has to claim the £81.60 ssp, would we be able to get a temporary increase in our housing benefit, as the household income will drop by £140 a week.

He wants as little time off as possible, but as his job is physical and no desk jobs available, he may have to have longer than the 4 weeks he can be paid full for.

The dr has said if in 2 weeks time his knee is better, he can return to work until the op is scheduled, so could possible use the other 2 weeks sick leave when the operation takes place, but we just want to know where we stand if he needs to take longer and have to claim ssp.

Yep, it can/should be adjusted - just let the council know of the changes as soon as possible as they can only make the change from the date they are informed.
