Have you tried confused.com? They are meant to check loads of insurers. Or get quotes through a broker. I always use Swinton Colonnade as my broker. They've done me good over the years0

1) Do your Pass Plus immediately (this reduced your insurance by approx 1/3)
2) Don't even consider anything above 1.2l engine, ideally 1litre.
3) Ford Ka's, Saxo's, VW Polo's are all pretty low insurance.
4) Volunteering a higher excess could reduce your premium
5) Only take out third party fire & theft
6) Enter your details into https://www.confused.com for the cheapest available quote
Hope this helps x0 -
If you ever plan to lend your car to lower risk people, maybe you mum or dad, it may reduce your quote if you add them as named drivers.0

Two companies not included in confused.com are
quinn-direct
ecarinsurance
Both specialize in young drivers and give pass plus discounts. Also try elephant and bell direct.
Best of luck.0 -
Also, it's worth noting that Direct Line offer no claims to named drivers - so maybe you could pursuade someone you know (parents) to switch to direct line and put you as a named driver...?0

thanks for your advice everyone.directline quoted me £2000 but im still hoping i can get a better one!0

When you passed did you get a magazine called drive on with your pass certificate? When I passed I checked a couple of the brokers in there who specialise in young/inexperienced drivers and saved £400 on the best quote from the usual tips advertised on this site.
Definately do pass plus - the experience you gain will be worth it alone but I saved £600 on my insurance!
Car insurance premiums are largely on the insurance groups - try to go for group 4 or lower. You'll find many 1.4's are in group 4 and most of the smaller engines are group 3-4 so you may be able to get a slightly more powerful car, which will serve you better on motorways, for only a slight increase in insurance.
Check out https://www.whatcar.co.uk and https://www.parkers.co.uk for insurance groups for the cars your interested in.
Also don't overestimate your annual mileage as this can add huge amounts.0 -
5) Only take out third party fire & theft0
