In addition to stove/ extendable flue pipe, anything else needed? Just looking roughly at stoves at the moment- our fireplace is decorative, think costs would prohibit a proper fireplace just now....0

If you dont have a working chimney then you are looking to either have that opened and lined, or as we have, a double walled liner which costs more then the stove and goes right up and out the roof
You also need a hearth and register plate and if you will prolly have to have your fireplace opened up and the wood fire surround removed0 -
Opening not a problem- hash job by previous owners! The rest- will get checked.... Have a heating engineer coming out to flush the system for me today- it's in a bad state, but can be sorted. Aware the fireplace has a false backing hiding a hole left by either a defunct or removed back boiler. I'll let him trace that up.
Chimney was working at one point, but since that was 20-odd years ago, I'll not rely on that....0 -
We have a charnwood (I think) and it is linked into our back boiler & heats all the radiators in the house and the water. We couldn't live without it, my hubby cuts peats every year now and we try not to burn the oil if we can help it, in fact we went from March to Septermber this year without any oil.0

We've actually got lucky, a guy looking at our boiler for a service is a full heating engineer, and is going to check the chimney for us for free, then we'll decide what we're doing. Price was haggled for the boiler too!0

I have been to a stove place near me today and was refreshed by the 'down to earth' attitiude rather than the 'hard sell'. It was nice to get an honest opinion on stoves. The lady said that the chinese stoves are not that hard wearing and could potentially crack and that is why some places can sell them cheap. Ones that are made in the UK have to adhere to more safety cheaks etc than the foreign made ones. Makes sense really ...
Seems some firms (like Wilsons) have a third party to dig out the stove space. If there are any problems, it is therefore nothing to do with Wilsons themselves. I would rather employ a company that will cover their own work. Also the quote that I got from Wilsons would 'blow your head off'.....I shall go else where.
I have decided on the charnwood type and local company to do the whole work. Now to save on the rest of the money!!:beer:0 -
We've decided we will do it, but as baby is arriving in a few weeks, it'll be in stages....
A large part we will do ourself- the fireplace is purely decorative, and removing some of the excess brickwork to give us proper room is certainly within our capabilities..
The quote we had for everything was reasonable, but not justifiable at the moment with baby- we hadn't intended on getting one, it was coincidental that it came up in conversation with him!0
