Having lived in a property for six months with two others I have been asked to pay my share of the bill which according to Scottish Power is £1500 for the period, am I to assume a £3000/ annum bill is possible in a 3 bed cottage?

Please, electricity is sold in kWhrs, as measured by the meter, not £££s.
Your question is impossible to answer.
Scrutinise the bill for dates of supply, readings, reading dates and type of reading (Actual, Customer or Estimated).
Also get a handle on your consumption by reading the meter daily for a week, then weekly for the rest of the month. Then monthly or whenever you receive a bill with an estimated reading. If electricity is your heating fuel, winter consumption is much higher than summer usage.0
