WOW i go away on holiday and come back to a brand new shiny thread!
Hi everyone :) How are you?
We have actually been back nearly a week but its taken me this long to get the house back in order and washing done!
I managed to get a nearly new duvet on freecycle yesterday - id given up hope of buying one as funds have vanished but im so chuffed that we now have something to snuggle up on the sofa with when the weather turns. :)
Guinea pigs being insulated and put in the shed this coming weekend as well as digging over the garden ready for the frost to penetrate the soil.
Im almost ready now for the weather to hit.
I need to find another hot water bottle on the very cheap side but will have to wait until payday and i think we will be hitting the late carboot and dump shops for a few blankets, flask, slippers for me etc.
Anyway just wanted to say hi and im back and cant wait to stay upto date with you all on the shiny new thread over the coming months :)
Everything is always better after a cup of tea

    hi all

our power has just come back on after a 24 hour powercut....

it has made me realize i need a landline phone that works in a powercut - Does anyone know where you can buy them from?

Also i need a battery operated radio - again does anyone have any recommendations?

Other than that we were well prepared with our camping lanterns, torches, candles, camping stove etc...

but i did miss the internet!

    Good morning.

Had a really bad nights sleep with my back which appears to have seized up again :( Today's plans include finding something in lieu of a shoulder pad to pin on the back of the letter box on the front door. I have loads of crochet squares - some of them quite a dense pattern - so will give them a go.

I also have to sort out some candles so will be trying Wilkinsons for a couple of packs of plain white ones. Will prob have to raid the glass & metal recycling bin for some jars to put them in :rotfl: We had a power cut last year that affected the entire town that I'm in so will be prepared!

Edited to add: The interview went really well and I should be starting back at work on the 31 October :T :j :D It will be quite a journey for me as I'll be working in a branch in a Manchester suburb (not a nice one ) and will need a bus, tram and another bus to get there each day. I can work 8am till 4pm though which will be better as I'm up early anyway. Will have to look at saving for a car now. Thank you for all your good luck messages :A

Congrats on the move, change always moves your life on, I'm sure something good will come from it :T
Thank you to all the money savers:beer: for all the wisdom, companionship, bargains, competitions and ideas:T you have made a transformation to our household, Thank you, it would have been so much harder without you and together we are amazing :A:smileyhea

Ooops...I can't stop buying candles! Bought another 2 Ribbon Scents in Tesco as they were half price @ £3. I hope to get a power cut now so I can use the tealights etc up. But there is nothng nicer than coming into a nice smelling house during Winter. Esp when snowing. Kids home from school, warm house, candles glistening.......

......now need to take off the rose glasses & *note to self" STOP BUYING CANDLES!

Coming out of lurkdom to say "thank you" to all you lovely people. I have just bought hot water bottles from the £shop after all the recommendations from this thread. Had a new boiler installed during the summer, so should be more efficient, and the loft has been insulated. Hope we are warmer this winter .
Still got lots to do before I am ready, but have made a start.

Candles I know! I burn loads of an evening and can't stop. It's going to cost me an absolute arm and a leg and I know what is going to happen ~ i'll have non left when we have a power cut. Must must must buy more candles!

Tealights? Are Ikea still the cheapest for tealights?

So far, all we've had to do to protect ourselves from the cold is put the winter duvet on the bed. I have a couple of fleeces flung over the backs of sofas in preparation for chilly evenings snuggled up on the sofa :D and washed all our winter coats last week. Need to invest in some new scarves and gloves though, one of my darling cats has been secretly using them as a cosy bed and they are now beyond help

Argos have the Bob Kat Sledges on offer for £7.49 at the moment - item 367/3843. Showing as £9.99 in this link, but when you add it to your trolley, the price shows as £7.49

    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3673843/Trail/searchtext%3ESLEDGE.htm

Thanks springdreams - didn't even think to look there, certainly the cheapest so far. For some reason the Argos website is having a strop and won't let me check if the item is in stock, will try later.

Good news - we've got the go ahead to get our bedroom and bathroom rads replaced. Both the bleed screws have snapped off (one was already like it), we have a pretty cold house anyway (not totally sure why, it's only 18 years old, though our plumber friend thinks our rads were under specified in the first place, the bedroom one is clearly too small, and the bathroom one could do with being a double. We're getting a wider rad in the bedroom and have pushed the boat out and ordered a chrome towel rail heater for the bathroom, he may even be able to fit us in next week :j Have added 'get boiler serviced' to the list. It's a rubbish one anyway (combi) and if you want the heating on and a hot bath at the same time forget it! Hopefully they may be able to do something with it.

Argos still have corded phones. We bought a real cheapo basic BT phone from them years ago now and we have it up in the loft. If and I hope it doesn't happen, it does go then we know where it is to connect up.

Hate to tell all of you I have just been looking at the 10 day weather forecast and next week it is going to get much colder, daytime highs of about 10-12 degrees!!
Cat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money :D
