I wrote to ask my landlord if I can apply to have the loft insulation inceased from a scantily covered 2 inches to 10 with the 100% grant I am entitled to from the government and he said he does not want me to have it done because he does not want men in the loft possibly causing damage to the rooftiles !!! He even said I should not have let anyone into the loft to look. Can you believe it? Is there anything that I can do?

Pop over to the House Buying, Renting, Selling forum here on MSE and ask your question there, but as a longtime renter with good understanding of housing law I'd say you're better to look for a warmer house to live in and a better LL. What a ridiculous answer he gave you.
:A Thanks to all the lovely people who contribute their advice! :A

What a nightmare - sometimes it just doesn't pay to 'do the right thing'

When I was in rented, I got the cavity walls done AND the loft plus all windows and doors draughtproofed with a grant. I never mentioned it and neither did he :D

I wonder if he ever noticed it had been done? :D

I am trying to get a housing association to take me on. I have the landlord from hell at the moment.

Awwww (((hugs))) been there ... my last LL was horrendous - I remember when the inside of the fireplace collapsed (it was the only source of heating) and he took ages to get it fixed.

I didn't want to complain too much as he'd just chucked my neighbours out (who'd been there for nearly 10 years) as they'd complained that the roof was leaking - not just the odd drip, but literally pouring in when it rained. (He got away with it as he said he wanted to rennovate the house which is apparently OK). They were made homeless and spent several months living in a hostel.:(

Anyway, when it was eventually done, the hearth was a different size and the carpet didn't fit by over a foot (and was full of holes before this anyway). He was determined not to replace it but I bumped into his wife one day (she was lovely) and invited her in for a cuppa - when she saw it she was horrified and it was replaced within a week!;)

The ones I had before that were lovely .... it makes such a huge difference so wishing you luck with moving to the HA.

    North East where? Scotland, Northumberland??

Got our firewood in now - 2 tonnes neatly stacked. Oil tank full. Coal bunker full. Kindling chopped. Dehumidifier up and running - its excellent, feels loads warmer and great for drying clothes and wet waterproofs. The vinyl floor in the kitchen used to stay wet for ages after mopping - not now, we just run the dehumidifier for an hour and its dry.
  • I think I need a dehumidifier:( - wee bedroom window was running this morning.

The other rooms aren't too bad but I dry my washing in there and there's never any heating on upstairs it's really damp and horrible in there today (and I did put the heating on for 1/2 an hour yesterday ... but it was only downstairs:o).

I've bought some of the wee tubs with crystals in as an emergency measure but think I'll may have to look into getting a proper unit (except I'm skint!).

  • RFTA, they are good, but don't expect them to completely clear your windows. The main bonus of a dehumid is that they remove the moisture from the air meaning that your rooms will heat up quicker. I guess it depends on the type of house you live in as well, i've lived in pre 1850's houses all my life and with single glazed windows you will see condensation at some point, dehumid or not.

I just bunged mine in the SC with stock, cornflour, herbs, S&P and cooked it all day... Then picked off the bones and fat, and put it back in the gravy. (probably even better if roasted in the oven first, or browned in a pan)

It was the first time I had cooked it and I was really impressed by the lovely meat on it. Yummmmmy :)

What temps have you got over there Kmiller? In celsius if poss - don't understand F :D Have you had any snow at all?
