Child benefit help

Hi All,
This is a bit of an unusal one but hoping someone can advise.

OH has been offered a job overseas (non EU) but it looks as if he will be paid in the UK and net salary transferred to bank overseas.

Our adult children will be remaining in the UK with (almost) 17 year old dd. The youngest is in full time college (main reason she wants to stay) and adult two have agreed to be guardians.

As OH is being paid in UK, will this impact on youngest receiving CB, which is currently paid into my account and I transfer it all to her? Can we leave well alone and just continue to receive into bank and transfer to dd account?

If there will be an impact, eldest dd will apply for CB for her sister as she is working/paying NI but would we need to go down the route of her being legal guardian, ie via a solicitor or will CB agency be happy with letter from us stating agreed guardianship?

Hope that's not too confusing!
Many thanks

  • Looks like you can't continue receiving it. Probably best to give the child benefit people a call to find out how to transfer it temporarily to the child who will look after your youngest.

Thanks, it does look like my eldest daughter will have to claim CB on the youngest one's behalf. I'll give them a call when things are more definate and we know more.

    Hi,
Just to update on my original question and the responses I got.

Having checked the relevant page on direct.gov as sleepless saver suggested, we would be unable to claim CB for our youngest daughter as we would not be living in an EU country. I called the CB agency today and they have told me that if we go to live overseas, we have to surrender our claim and let them know who will be claiming for our youngest.

Forms will then be sent to new carer (daughter no.1) who will need to complete and return, including forms about youngest's education - she's at college doing a 2 yr BTEC course - and this should all take approx 12 weeks to process. Eldest daughter does not have to be legal guardian, she will be down as carer.

Hope that helps others who may be in a similar situation and thanks
    for advice.

    Hi All,
Just another quick question as I saw something on another thread that made me think about this:

My eldest daughter will be claiming CB for my youngest when we move overseas, will she need the youngest's birth certificate to do this or will the fact that we've been getting CB for nearly 17 years render this not needed?
    Many thanks

  • I transferred the CB to OH and we just filled in a form to change the names - didn't need to send any certs etc - not sure if you will have to in this case ... but really no different. It was more a case of me giving up the CB that they were interested in.
