I believe that you can ask the undertaker to provide a 'basic' funeral, which is much cheaper than the price you mentioned, and probably will be about the amount covered by the grant. That is if you feel the amount of money in the estate of your uncle will not cover the proposed funeral costs.

the price i mentioned was for the 'basic' no frills package, £550 of the cost is to reopen a grave to that my uncle could be buried with his mother..

The all in 'basic' price I was talking about was about £600, but this was for a cremation. Of course, if you want such extras as you mention, then the costs will escalate.
