Car registration was wrong, do I pay?

I would like to ask for advice, as I received a parking ticket on 12 July from UKPC but my car registration number was shown incorrectly on it (the numbers were transposed). I took the view that since they had the wrong reg. number they'd get nowhere trying to track down the owner and ignored it (having first looked at your v. sensible advice!). Today 30 Sept I got a letter with a photo of the car and a demand for £80.00 for . Am I right to contest it as they did not issue the itcket correctly in the first place?

I'd be grateful for your experience and advice - thanks!

Stop worrying, dont waste any more of your time, just ignore it and ignore anything else they send you.

they will get fed up eventually and stop.

I cant see how you have got a letter to your address if the reg no is wrong, the DVLA would have come up with someone elses address
so how come they got your addresss.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • You don't even have to pay UKPC if your car registratrion was RIGHT. Makes no difference, they seek an unlawful amount which goes beyond actual losses and they know better than to try court. Ignore all the way.

The halfheads at UKPC probably copied it incorrectly reflecting their low education. It's as well they did though - this way the OP has sought advice whereas before, he may have paid without making a single enquiry. Good fluke!
  • Hi and thanks so much for all the responses; yes, a good fluke, but UKPC presumably got the info from DVLC in the end because they'd also taken a photo of the car including the mumberplate and are presumably hoping I didn't notice they'd issued the ticket to an incorrect number in the first place.

What I think I'm asking is, if I stay quiet and they try to pursue it to court, will I win when I point out they issued the original ticket incorrectly? Or would I do better to challenge it now and point out their error so they realise I'll fight them?
  • Good point. Obviously, THEY would need to make sure that the vehicle they are claiming was involved in the alleged incident WAS correct and there can be no half-measures on that.

You would win for another reason - because Contract Law permits a landowner to seek losses resulting from your actions and NOT an amount contrived to punish you for your action. Arbitrary fines are illegal and using the guise of "parking charge" instead of "penalty charge" is not a disclaimer for your antagonist.

But if you continue to ignore, it won't even go this far.

Stop taking them so seriously, this is not going to Court. People who write to them are giving them info such as who was driving - why on earth would you do that? Why provide information to a scam PPC just because they have copied a Council PCN and passed it off as real?

Just check the top thread 'PPC letters, what to expect' and 'welcome, please read before posting' with the must-see Watchdog youtube clip linked on it.
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

The wrong number on the thingy attached to your car is irrelevant because the thingy is irrelevant! Unless it has Anytown Police or Anywhere county council it is a piece of paper.
It may look like an official parking ticket that's their plan, but its simply a piece of paper, asking you if you would be kind enough to pay them some money. The same as any following letters will be. Any contact at all will just encourage them further. Just simply file the letters under ignore, and forget them.
