I wanna land-line phone that does emergency calls only

Hi

Don't know whether there is any such thing but we need a phone which is accessible to the public so that they can make an emergency call if necessary.

We do not want the phone to have any other function. We would like to use our existing line and have the phone as an extension in a box outside please

Thanks for looking

    Several possibilities.

You could use a small PBX (phone system) and apply call barring to the outside extension.

You could use a call barring box such as a Mitel Smart or Orchid Dialler, if you can find them second-hand, which restricts that extension to dialling preprogrammed numbers.

You can use a phone which only dials preprogrammed numbers eg ATL Berkshire or Interquartz (note these require the supplier to program for you, or the purchase of an additional programming keypad); Interquartz Doorphone, or Gai-Tronics

    You can use a payphone.

You could use an ordinary phone, open it up and put sticky tape under the buttons 3-8 and 0, so only 999 and 112 work (and other combinations of the numbers).

It depends which emergency numbers people have to be able to phone, whether 999 alone is sufficient or you want other numbers such as police non-emergency, vehicle recovery, or to contact a caretaker or local office.

I'd buy a standard phone, open it up and disable all except the 9 button.

Each phone will be different but it may be possible to do this with a small piece of insulation tape inside each to prevent electrical connection.

Remember though that, if the phone has a pulse/tone switch, some bright spark will probably switch it to pulse and try to make calls by tapping the cradle rests.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Pulse-tone switch on the phone won't affect switchhook tapping - or using a handheld DTMF dialler.

Depends upon your exact requirements, but any GSM mobile with the sim card removed will give 999/112 access ie old voda o2 orange T-mobile handset with a good and charged battery.

Have you tried it? Most phones will say 'INSERT SIM CARD' on similar. In those territories that DO allow non-SIM connections to the emergency services, UK was never one of them. OFCOM did put out a consultation paper, but I believe it never got anywhere, due to the fact a no-SIM phone means a call with no number. The IMEI could be extracted from the host network, but not much else - so forget this as an option.
