BRITISH GAS Locked In to Websaver ?

I am a dual fuel customer with British gas and currently on their Websaver 11 online tariff. The account is run online with no paper bills. It is easy to use and you get nectar points for sending in your meter readings. They have just increased their prices and so I was looking about for a cheaper deal elsewhere. I discovered that to leave British Gas there would be a £60 penalty (£30 each fuel). I rang them up and mentioned I was considering leaving. The phone call lasted two minutes before the sales person offered me a nice £75 off my gas bill if I stayed another 9 months. I will get the money off in 9 months time though. This added to the £60 exit fee made it worthwhile staying put with British Gas. So if you are tied down try it.

You do realise that if they increased your Websaver 11 prices it was possible to escape the Early Termination Charge?

£75 off to stay may (or may not) be a good offer, but will you be able to prove it in 9 months time?
  • Websaver 8 (im on E7/leccy only) was due to end 1st October but has been extended to Nov 1st, if id elected to change suppliers for 1st October i wonder if BG woulda tried penalising me.....i dont trust em

Not always true, its a variable tariff, so just because it increases in price it doesn't mean you can escape without a fee.

If the increase is roughly in line with market trends and doesn't break the T&C's its up to the supplier if they charge you for breaking the contract.

You can probably reject the increase and freeze your old prices for a few weeks whilst you swap to a new tariff but your still likely to be charged the exit fee (unless you swap to tariff under the same supplier).
  • if they END my tariff im not tied to them though am i?

Have you been away for a couple of months and missed all the threads on this issue and in particular mention of Ofgem's letter of guidance?
