Fitting a light

hi all

I want to fit a light outside my front door.
there is nothing there currently.

it will be suspended from the ceiling, I'll run the cables through a small hole in the door frame into the fuse box which sits in the hall just behind the front door.

does anyone have time to write some instructions for me of what to do?
or know of anywhere where there are some?

a search on the net just seems to explain how to REPLACE rather than install a brand new light...

any help appreciated

Whatever you do, don't run the light direct from the fuse box. It needs to be on the existing lighting circuit.

You need to make a spur from the nearest junction box (probably of your hall light). I'm not an electrician but, no doubt, someone on this forum, will advise you in detail of how to do this.

Adding an external light is notifiable to your LABC under Part P of the Building regs. Get a sparky in, it will be cheaper overall.
