DVD Recorder Problem

I have a DVD recorder that works great when playing commercial DVDs but as soon as I insert a new disc it just says loading - but never actually does load the disk.
Also if I insert a previously recorded disk this does not play (just says loading)
Any help would be appreciated

another question- have you finalized the disk?
that will cause them to not play in any player0
