Just came back from holidays and heard a pop when i just turned on the mains switch, even though my PC is connected to a surge protector.
I assume it's the power supply. Just took out all the other leads and left the 24pin in to the motherboard and no luck, neither on a different power point with a different kettle cable, so I assume it is that the PSU has gone kaputt.
It was an ENERMAX EG851AX-VH (W) which was a decent PSU but bought it over 5yrs ago and I haven’t kept in touch with PSU developments.
Can anyone recommend a good PSU to replace it with? The Enermax was a 660w. It had are eight Molex, two FDD, two S-ATA and two PCI-E connectors, so would at least those requirements.
Alternatively, might be better to replace my PC? It’s a dual Opteron 2.8Ghz, 16GB, 2TB PC. It’s as quick as it used to be, but now might be the time to upgrade to a better, quicker processor such as the Core i’s from Intel.
Thanks in advance!

I suppose with the cost of energy, the ones to look for are the most energy efficient
Some tips here

I would not replace the PC if it does what you need
Upgraded PC components are probably being loaded through the back door of a shop as you are walking out the front door with the current ones0 -

And that is the question: "if". I assume it is the PSU that has gone.
I might just buy one in PC Rip-off World and test it. If it works then great, if not, return the PSU.0 -
You might also want to do a thorough check of all other components as well as it's not unheard of for a PSU to take other components out with it when they go bang!
As far as a decent PSU goes, anything by one of the bigger brands (Corsai, Antec, Coolermaster etc) should be fine. I'd avoid any of the lesser known brands. Better to buy a lower wattage branded PSU that a higher wattage unbranded one. There's a thread here that might help; https://forums.ebuyer.com/showthread.php?26105-timmyGCSE-s-Guide-to-PSU-s
Ebuyer do a good selection that might be worth looking at.

That pop was the fuse in the power supply, don't bother try to replace plus a PSU holds a lethal electrical charge. As said eBuyer do a good selection.0
