How essential is a toner?

I generally use a cleanser, toner and moisturiser (basically because this is what I was taught). Im just wondering how essential the toner is? I use a hot cloth type cleanser so there is water involved.
I was wondering if I could just use some cold water on cotton wool in place of the toner or whether the toner did a job I don't know about!
Thanks in advance if you can help.

I just scrub with a flannel each evening, then moisturize. Has been working for 20 years now. :TDebts 2004: £6000..............................................Aug 2007: £0!!!!0

As you have been taught, it is generally considered best practice to follow the 3 step routine of cleanse, tone and moisturise. However toning is the step which is most commonly overlooked.
A good toner which is sympathetic to your skin type will provide many benefits including balancing your skin's pH and moisture levels, regulating oil production, evening out pores, protecting and aiding absorption of moisturising products.
Many people do skip the toning stage with no obvious adverse effects, but the majority of experts agree that toning is important for optimum skin health.
Hope that helps a little.

Sorry, but the dermatologist that I had to see a few years back told me the best thing to do is find the skincare routine that suits you, rather than blindly following the 'cleanse, tone and moisturise' route.
The less chemical junk you put on your skin, the better. I use an unscented liquid soap and water on my face, and either shea butter or cocoa butter for a mosituriser. I think you could say my skin still looks good... I got asked for ID to buy beer last week, and I'm 36.
Personally, I haven't used toner in 15 years, and I only used it for about a week, as I found it dried out my skin. Your body adjusts itself naturally without it. Just make sure the soap residue is washed off your skin.
Good luckSome days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

i thought toner was pointless..... maybe useful if your cleanser wasn't fully removed or if you have oily skin, but otherwise an expensive waste of money (and it would seem easier to me to just rinse a cleanser off properly if that's an issue?). had a google and from this article, a lot of skin experts and dermatologists - who i'd tend to trust more than people flogging their own brand of toner - think it's pointless too.

I use a face wash of some description, then I splash my face with cold water, then moisturise. Can't remember the last time I used a toner as I find cold water rinses any excess product off the skin & helps close pores.0

I've always been told that a toner is really only necessary if you have oily skin. As long as you're using a decent cleanser I'd say there's not really any need for an additional toner. I also use a hot cloth cleanser and just splash my face with cold water afterwards before I moisturise.DFW by end of June 2016...! LBM June 2011

The one I was told was if you use a type of cleanser that you rinse off with water, you don't need toner as in this case the water takes the place of a toner. If your cleanser isn't a rinse-off type then you need to use toner to remove any left-behind cleanser.0

I use neutrogena soap for dry skin every morning and night and in the shower over my body/ It's brilliant
I use a rose water toner I get from asian food stores . it's all natural and can even be used in cooking apparently
And i don't really moisturise if i'm at home is that bad?
I never know. I use Simply SPF moisturiser if i'm going out0 -
I use a face wipe to remove the majority of my make-up then a cleanser, toner and moisturiser.
I like using toner as it removes any cleanser residue and seems to freshen up my face. It also leaves my skin clean and ready for my eye cream and moisturiser.
It all takes so long, everday :doh:0
